Its responsibilities include maintaining and updating all policies and procedures that govern the department while managing the Offices of Assessment & Planning, Accreditation, Special Events, Office of the Chaplaincy, Background, and Recruitment and Safety & Risk Management. The Office of Support Services supports all other AFRD divisions of labor. He was appointed into the shift commander position in September of 2019 and then to Deputy Chief of Field Operations in June of 2021. Chief Harris enters the chief ranks in 2015 serving as a battalion chief in the 2 nd & 3 rd battalions. He was promoted to captain in 2009 where he served on Engine 6 and Squad 4 and was certified in all special operations disciplines. He served as a firefighter during the 1996 Olympic Games, was appointed to fire apparatus operator in 2003, and promoted to lieutenant in 2004, where he served in the shift commander's office and later at station 1. Chief Harris received the Mid Town Atlanta “Distinguished Service Award” in 2012 as a Captain. He received an Associates Degree in Fire Services Management and later graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety and Health. Field operations is responsible for mitigating incidents, such as Fire Suppression, EMS, and Special Operations to include: High angle rope, Hazardous Material, Trench Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Structural collapse, Swift Water Rescue, and the Dive Team.ĭeputy Chief Derek Harris began his career with the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department in 1995. Chief McLemore holds numerous certifications within the Fire Service.įield Operations Division has day-to-day oversight of 31 engines, 14 truck companies, 1 heavy rescue unit, and numerous special operations companies across the city. He has proudly served the citizens of Atlanta for greater than 28 years and has served in all ranks within the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department. He is also been credentialed 3 times as a Chief Fire Officer (CFO) from the Center for Public Safety Excellence. He is also a graduate of the Carl Holmes Development Institute. He has earned his bachelor’s degree from the Florida A & M University and master’s degree from Columbus State University in Public Administration (MPA) in 2010. He is a proud graduate of Westwood High School (now Westlake). The duties of this office include filling in for the fire chief, as needed, in dealings with the city administration as well as other entities.įirst Deputy Chief James McLemore was born and raised in the City of Atlanta. This position is responsible for providing executive level oversight to all of the day-to-day operations of the organization to include: Administrative, Operations, Support & Technical Services, as well as the Airport Fire Division. The First Deputy Chief is 2nd in Command of Atlanta Fire Rescue Department.
